How to Build a Football CV That Actually Works

Updated: Nov 7

If you’re trying to go pro, you've probably heard about creating a “perfect” football CV.

But here’s a truth few tell you—no one actually cares about your CV on its own.

At the end of the day, what matters most is what you do on the field.

I’m Alan Deriard, co-founder of Elite Football, Australia’s largest player agency.

While a CV might not be everything, it’s still a tool, and if you’re going to use it, make it effective. Here’s how.

Why Football CVs Are Necessary—But Not That Important

Your CV won’t make or break your career, but it can open doors when it’s endorsed by a reputable source, like an agency.

If you’re under our representation, your CV features our endorsement, which holds weight with clubs.

For players looking to move within leagues or get scouted, a CV can serve as a quick way for coaches and agents to understand your journey, skills, and goals.

Essential Components of a Football CV

A football CV doesn’t need to be flashy or lengthy. It should be simple and direct. Here’s a basic structure to follow:

  1. Personal Information: Include your full name, contact info, birth date, nationality, and playing position.

  2. Stats and Key Performance Indicators:

    • If you’re playing in local leagues, such as Australia’s NPL, include your performance stats (goals, assists, etc.).

    • If you’re moving to a new league, limit details on local clubs since they’re unlikely to be recognised.

  3. Clubs and Experience:

    • List the clubs you’ve played for. If you’ve had professional or semi-pro experience, highlight those.

    • Avoid listing too many clubs, as it may give the impression of inconsistency. Limit to key experiences.

  4. Achievements and Awards:

    • Highlight recognitions like “Top Goal Scorer” or “Player of the Year.”

  5. Highlight Video:

    • Your highlight video link should be prominently placed.

    • Keep it short (1-3 minutes) and impactful. Select only your best clips; leaving people wanting more is better.

  6. Physical Attributes: List attributes like height, weight, and fitness scores if relevant.

  7. References:

    • Add a few reputable references, such as coaches or agents who can vouch for you.

How to Make Your CV Stand Out

Once the basics are down, make sure you include these tactics to capture the attention of whoever reads it:

  1. Add a Photo and Social Media Handle:

    • A clear, professional photo in your kit can make a lasting impression.

    • Adding your Instagram handle is helpful, as agents or clubs often want to check out your social profile. Use your profile as a professional portfolio—showcasing your football journey can boost your credibility.

  2. Be Concise:

    • Stick to one page. Avoid writing an entire backstory or listing every club you’ve ever played with.

  3. Catch Their Attention:

    • When emailing your CV, consider a subject line that stands out, like: “Quick Introduction – Aspiring Midfielder” or “Future Pro Player in Your Inbox.”

    • The body of your email should be short, engaging, and authentic. It’s okay to add a little personality—mention why you admire the person you’re reaching out to.

Avoid Common Mistakes in Your Football CV

  1. Too Much Information:

    • Oversharing can detract from your core message. Stick to relevant stats and achievements, especially those from recent seasons.

  2. Long Highlight Reels:

    • No one has time to watch a 10-minute video. Keep it short, impactful, and easy to access. Use YouTube or Vimeo, ensuring the link is public.

  3. Unprofessional Photos or Layouts:

    • Your CV should be clean and professional. No blurry photos or cluttered designs—invest in a good headshot or action shot if possible.

The Importance of Standing Out

In an industry where everyone’s looking to catch a break, make sure your CV doesn’t just blend in with the thousands others receive. Consider what would make you pay attention if you received dozens of similar emails.

Add a touch of creativity to how you present yourself; it goes a long way.

A football CV is simply a tool. It can open the first door if done right, but it won’t land you a contract. To make an impact, focus on your game, work with reputable contacts, and approach each career step with purpose and dedication.

Remember, it’s not about how much is on the paper;

it’s about how much you put into the game.
